From around the Ashikaga Shogunate and onward most samurai fought with either katana (or other sword variants such as a no daichi), naginata, yari, or the yumi (bow), all two handed weapons. Actually, there are a variety of reasons why samurai did not use shields in combat, none of which being that most samurai fought primarily with bow and arrow as you said. ![]()
